'In those days there was no king in Israel; everybody did that which was right in his own eyes'. Judges 21:25
These words were written centuries ago but surely are becomingly ever increasingly true in our society. We live in a world where everybody does what is right in there own eyes and our society, values and lives are crumbling around us. There is nothing or no one that we can build our lives, our community and society on. There are lots of competing philosophies, political theories and ways to live our lives and we tend to 'pick and mix' what works for us. We are told there is no absolute truth, nothing that can act as a plumb line for our lives and society.
As Christians we believe Jesus stands against this thinking and says quite categorically that he is 'the way, the truth and the life' John 14:6 The book of Judges from which the above words were taken is one of those hard books of the bible that has some very controversial and difficult passages but in essence is a book about how God raises us men and women to bring about his salvation of the people and draws then back to worshipping God. Therefore it is an interesting book to study at this time as we need God to bring people back to the worship of Him and not just doing what they think is right in there eyes. We hope you will be able to join us on our journey through this challenging book. The series begins on Sunday May 28th and continues each Sunday until August.
If we believe Jesus is the truth, then Christianity stands or falls on the life, death and resurrection of Jesus as recorded in the gospels. And if these are not reliable or true then Jesus cannot be the one that draws us back to our true selves and relationship with God and we might as well continue doing what we feel is right in our own eyes. There has been a lot of publicity recently about Dan Brown's Da Vinci code and the challenge it raises to Christianity. This is not something that Christians can dismiss and we must face the challenge, likewise those who accept the implications of the Da Vinci code must face the challenge of the Jesus of the gospels. For this reason on Sunday May 21st at 10:30am we will have a special service where we will present our response to the Da Vinci Code. We will then after this seek to continue this dialogue for those who are interested through our web site so please 'watch this space'.
